Chapter 13: Media Effects

In the 1920s the United States was still struggling with the effects of World War 1 and rebuilding its economic and social structures. Newspapers were the main source of information, but radio began to build an audience. Along with these new information and entertainment providers came the fear that the media could take over peoples minds and control the way they thought and behaved. many people thought of Media as a "magic bullet" or a "hypodermic needle" that could penetrate people's bodies and minds and cause them to all react the same way to a mediated message. (Norman  J. Medoff & Barbra Kaye)

Now, media definitely has an impact or an effect on society today. For example, the 911 attack, media made it seem as if all Arabian people were terrorists. It made everyone look at Arabs differently. Its not just TV that effects how we act its also video games and music. Most video games that society plays today are violent games and those games definitely most peoples thoughts. The movies we watch has an effect on society as well. The difference between now and then is that our generation has more violent crimes than past generations because we are influenced by what we see in movies and video games and what we hear on the radio or in songs in general.

I think that in the future we will still be effected by media. In the 1920s we were effected by media and almost a century later we are still effected by what we read, see, and hear. i think that in the future it will be worse because I dont think that people today know that they are being influnced or effected by media.

Advertising  has been around  since about 3000 B.C.E. Babylonian clay tablets have been found inscribed with the names of merchants. the ancient Egyptians used some form of paper that was much more portable than previously used clay tablets to advertise the arrivals of ships carrying various goods. The ancient Romans hung stone and terra-cotta signs outside their shops to advertise the goods sold inside. in 1450 Johannes Gutenberg came up with the invention of printing which gave people the idea of distributing printed advertisements. The growing popularity of news papers in the 1700s led to the further development of printing in advertising. Advertising took on a new role in the 1800s with the Industrial Revolution. In the 1920s, radio advertising seemed to boost product sales. advertising got its first glimpse of television in 1939 at the New York World's Fair. ( Norman  J. Medoff & Barbra Kaye)

Today advertising is seen just about everywhere. It is used widely throughout the world in many different forms and techniques. Advertising is used today on television, radio, billboards, newspapers, internet, vehicles, and even pops up on our phones. Its is still used for the same purpose, to promote a product. Not much has changed about advertising. For example, in the 1950s and 60s, famous television stars would make commercials about someones product to get consumers to buy it. Today we still use that same concept. Our society uses celebrities to promote and advertise the products that they want people to buy. Although much has not changed about advertisements there was still some type of change. Today most companies resort to product placement instead of buying commercial time. This is where companies pay to have their product used or visible within a TV show or a movie. Today advertising is different from advertising then because we have technology and resources that they didn't have many decades ago.

Later:

I predict that advertising will take it to the next level. I think that one day soon if it hasn't happened already, that there will be advertisement in video games. I think that advertises will find a way to promote their product in every way imaginable. Future of Advertising

Chapter 4: Cable, Satellite, and Other Delivery Systems.

Then:

From the early days of television experimentation until the late 1970s, most people received television directly from the broadcast stations. Their television sets were attached to antennas that received the broadcast signal directly from the local television stations. Translators were not used used in the very early days of televisions, and many of the people who lived in areas far from big cities or where the television signal was blocked by hills or mountains couldn't receive television signals. In the late 1940s the FCC had difficulty assigning stations to frequencies or channels. There also were not that many franchises of cable companies around. ( Norman  J. Medoff & Barbra Kaye)

Now:

Now we barely use satellite dishes to watch television. Our society today uses cable lines and modems. The way we view cable now is different from how it was viewed years ago because we don't face the same  problems that people faced in the 70s. Our signals are more reliable and harder to block because most cable companies no longer use satellite dishes. Cable is different now from how it was in the 70's because we have multiple franchises and multiple cable companies. Our generation also uses digital video recorders. DVRs allow us to pause and rewind live TV. We also have the ability to re watch and record our favorite as many times as we desire. Our generation is different from previous generations because we have programs such as On Demand and Xfinity which allows us to to view a list of movies and shows scheduled to run on that station that we can watch as many times as we please. We also use cable for more than TV. We use it for phone lines and internet.

Later:

I predict that in the future we will slowly but surely start to view cable a lot less because it costs so much. I think that cable will still be around because most people would need their cable company for their internet and land lines. According to this video  future of cable  more people spend time watching Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu because its costs less. They think that cable will still be around because they will have to drop their prices in order to get their customers back.
